Life is a strange mixture of extremely good and extremely sucky. On one hand I have a wonderful husband who I am falling in love with all over again, I got a promotion, my art drought has ended... Then on the other hand (the one with the smashed knuckle and infected finger - for real) I can't pay my bills, I am still awful at keeping in touch with friends, I am not showing my dedication to karate as much as I would like to, I am the worst procrastinator... etc. All in all, I guess these things cancel each other out, but I would still like to be THE BEST AT EVERYTHING. The byproduct of all of this is suffocating guilt. Maybe I need to up my medication dose?

I can feel it creeping in on my soul... The annual obsession with Phantom of the Opera. The fact that I read the book every year and never tire of it is the mark of a truly good tale. I feel that this year will be the one where I delve into the dark symbolism of the and re-interpret it in my own creative way.

Firstly, the Erik/Christine relationship is the very epitome of the Death and the Maiden motif (a personal favourite of mine). DearDeath.com has this to say...

"In many dances of Death already figured a representation of Death with a fine lady or with a beautiful virgin. The image of a young woman was also found in the three ages and Death. However in both cases, there was no trace of erotcism. This old vision will take a new form at the end of the 15th century and become the theme of Death and the maiden, which will culminate in Germany at the Renaissance.

In this type of iconography, the young lady was not involved in a dance anymore, but in a sensual intercourse, which will become always more erotic as time went by. Death is usually represented as a skeleton or a decaying corpse. It can be gentle and loving or it can be rude and violent, in both cases the maiden usually does not resist and follow her master to the grave. Stressing the Christian linkage of death with sin, and sin with sex, the motif portrays death as a seducer undoing a young woman in the prime of carnal life.

In the symbolic, there is a confusion between the young and fresh body of the maiden and decaying body of Death. Fear may stimulate eroticism and death takes on unexpected possibilities. Death and the Maiden also echoes the mortality of our affections, that life is short as is the proud beauty of a woman, and encourages us to consider them more carefully.

In the iconography of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, death raped the living: countless scenes or motifs in art and in literature associated death with love, Thanatos with Eros, the agony of death with the orgasmic trance.

The outstanding achievements of Victorian art reflect the fundamental themes of Love and Death. The paintings depict the popular stories that fascinated Victorian audiences, such as Shakespeare's Juliet, Helen of Troy or the sorceress Circe. They are extravagantly emotional, endowing subjects drawn from the remote past with the passions and emotions of real people in the present: love and death, fear and longing, beauty and desire."

Erik and Christine's relationship also bears some similarity to the Hades/Persephone myth, but I'll save that for another entry.

Blog-worthy things that are happening:

- I got a promotion at work! In August I will no longer be the ASS. Manager, but the full-fledged Manager of Design & Production! Huzzah!

- I have decided to learn American Sign Language. Why? Because I feel like it. Not that I will have the oppourtunity to use it often whilst working in the orchestra industry, but I want to learn nonetheless.

- I have re-worked my personal design identity and will be launching a new website this weekend (hopefully).

- I have sent out feelers to get involved doing pro-bono design for local non-profits and have received some very positive response! This is good... I get portfolio pieces and I get to help out causes that I believe in.

I Dream of Zombie...

In an average week I would say that I dream about the living dead 3-4 out of 7 nights. These dreams are the most vivid and terrifying of all of my subconscious exploits. Upon waking I always feel like I have been through some sort of ordeal... Sometimes I'm simply fleeing from the zombies, but most of the time I am actively fighting them. It's very gruesome... One time I actually was a zombie myself!

What does this MEAN!? Surely there is some deeper meaning beyond my obvious nerdiness!

Dear Senator Costa,

As representative of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, it is your sworn duty to act as the voice of the people. I call upon you to fulfill that duty and vote NO on the reinstating of the same-sex marriage ban in our Commonwealth’s Constitution.

Are you married, Senator? I am. My husband and I married last November. It was the happiest day of my life. It makes me physically sick to my stomach to think that, if our world were slightly different, someone could have legally banned me from forging that union with the person I love. While we’re at it, why don’t we put a ban on mixed-race marriage, or on marriage between one partner who has HIV and one who doesn’t, or two people who are mentally retarded? Where does it end? This might seem like a logistical slippery slope, but this entire issue itself is a red herring! As a citizen whom you are sworn to represent, I am more concerned about the fact that it costs me $50 to fill up my Chevy Cavalier’s gas tank, and that I may not be able to afford to put my future children through college, than whether or not two men or two women should be allowed to get married. Frankly, I don’t think it is any of my business, and since the Constitution is supposed to be the agreed-upon will of the people, I don’t think it is the government’s business either. There are real fish to fry, Senator, like hunger and poverty. Why are we wasting time and tax-payer money – MY MONEY – on this?

Clearly, this issue is based on religious beliefs, something that varies from person to person. One cannot legislate morality. Need I remind you that we are a secular nation? Not to mention, regardless of one’s religious affiliations, the common thread between all faiths is love. The world is already running on a surplus of hate. Don’t you agree that we could use more love of all kinds?

Of course you must vote according to your conscience, but let this be upon your conscience also: In this moment you have the power to make a real positive difference in someone’s life. Why did you get into politics in the first place if it wasn’t to do just that?

I was all excited about the upcoming tournament for karate, but because of money issues I was not going to be able to go. I told my teacher this, and she tried to convince me but to no avail. Then last night after class she handed me a registration form and said, "Fill this out, you're going, I'll pay for it."

Master Gregor = teh awesome.

so, IT'S ON! Wooden boards quake with fear at the thought of my superior breaking skills!

I'll be competing in breaking and forms. No sparring this time, as I just do not have the endurance. Maybe next year I will do all 3. By then I will be a big scary red belt.

I knew when I met Keith that he and I were a match. I just had a SENSE. Call it what you will...

2. Fortune Telling: Fact or Fiction?
Fiction. All that is real is NOW and HERE.

3. Other Life: Fact or Fiction?
Honestly! Are we so vain that we think the whole song of the cosmos is about only us?! Even if within the realms of our present universe there is no other human-level life, the theory of parallel universes guarantees that in the greater universe there is! How many other Snoozins are there that sat down to write in their LJs but composed different entries? Maybe every time you make a choice, parallel universes split off for every other possible choice you could have made in that situation?

4. Afterlife: Fact or Fiction?
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. I think that when anything is destroyed its energy returns to the greater pool from whence it came and is recycled in some other form. Not to say that I believe in reincarnation in the sense that if I have good karma I will die and return as another version of myself. There is no enduring "I" to return. Some day I will expire and the energy that fueled this body and mind in this life will go on to maybe be part rock and part snake and part baby and part tree and part mushroom and part star or comet. That is enough for me.

it hurts to feel good

I feel like someone drove spikes into my inner thighs. Every single movement is excruciating. At the gym on Wednesday I was using this machine that works the inner and outer thighs and hips, and I think I may have used too much weight... I did all lower body and ab stuff, and over all it was a good workout. I didn't really like the leg press machine because I could feel it irritating my knees. I may come back to that one once my legs are a little stronger. I've met with a personal trainer twice now, so I know how to use all the machines necessary to give me a full body workout. It's pretty cool. I'll probably go back tomorrow morning for a while.

Karate has been a challenge recently. Due to the current crapiness of my work/home life, I have only been to class 3 times in the past 3 weeks. I am not going to be able to compete in the tournament because I feel like I am not ready, and with only two weeks to train I just won't have enough time to prepare. Plus, I simply cannot afford it. I am supposed to test next month, and I would rather spend my money on that.

Ugh. I hurt.
